The Hollywood Reporter has announced the top 10 films that it says have captured the hearts of cinema experts worldwide in the first half of this year.

Among these is the latest offering from the Polish filmmaker, whose Green Border premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year.

The list does not assign specific rankings. The films are listed alphabetically, based primarily on the opinions of film critics.

"Veteran Polish director Agnieszka Holland’s profoundly moving, flawlessly executed multistrand drama, shot in stark black and white, tracks refugees from various nations in 2021 trying to cross from Russia ally Belarus into EU member Poland," said Leslie Felperin, a contributing film critic at The Hollywood Reporter.

She added: "Facing inevitably tragic consequences, the characters become pawns in a gruesome game of 'pass the parcel' between guards on both sides of the title’s green border. It’s devastating to watch, but it’s a triumph as a piece of filmmaking."

The Hollywood Reporter list primarily includes feature films, but also make room for an animated film (Inside Out 2) and a Netflix documentary (Power).

The top 10 list contains films such as Challengers by Luca Guadagnino, Io Capitano by Matteo Garrone, Wildcat by Ethan Hawke, Evil Does Not Exist by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, La Chimera by Alice Rohrwacher, I Saw the TV Glow by Jane Schoenbrun, and Terrestrial Verses by Ali Asgari and Alireza Khatami.
